Shaw We Talk: Shaw College English Corner 2024 - Session 1
On the evening of September 11, the first session of “Shaw We Talk: Shaw College English Corner 2024” ticked off in F302, drawing enthusiastic participation from students. Professor Guo Xin from the School of Humanities and Social Science led a discussion on "Exploring Biases: The Influence of Perception", effectively blending intellectual insight with English language practice.
At the beginning, Prof. Guo introduced the concept of bias, guiding students in group discussions to explore its underlying causes and specific examples. She then elaborated on the five major categories of bias through an engaging word-filling game, encouraging students to create impromptu skits on stage that depicted any type of bias. As the event drew to a close, the professor screened a short video highlighting methods to overcome bias: taking a moment to slow down and reflect. The inaugural English Corner session concluded with laughter and delight. Students not only honed their spoken English skills through interaction but also deepened their comprehension of the five bias categories through their performances, equipping them to navigate and avoid the pitfalls of prejudiced thinking in their future studies and lives.
